Exercise media bandies the term “core” around but what does it mean?
Core muscles refer to the muscles at the centre of the body;
Rectus Abdominis
Obliques
Erectus Spinae
Transverse abdominis
Internal obliques
are the main muscles classed as core muscles.
Core exercises are movements that should be the cornerstone or “core” of any good exercises programme. They are movements that challenge the previously mentioned core muscles as well as multiple large muscle structures like the hips, thighs and shoulder girdle;
squats, jumps, deadlifts, sprints, presses, pulls, throws, climbs, strikes etc.
Those movements originate from the centre (core) of the body and radiate power outward toward the limbs – core movements. They help teach balance, body tension, coordination of muscles and hard work.
So there you have it, the meaning of core; anatomically and kinesthetically.
So now it’s time to work your core muscles with core movements. Everything else is just supplementary to your programme, icing on the cake if you will. If you spend more time on the smaller moves of crunches, curls, inner thigh master machines etc then your cake will have no base – you’ll just be a messy puddle of icing.
