A sage piece of advice from your Epsom Personal Trainer; DIETARY FAT IS OUR FRIEND.
Here is a great article for the full and I do mean full low down on fats, the good the bad and the ugly.
The article is long so I have abstracted some of my favourite parts that I feel are of great relevance to us all;
“Excess consumption of polyunsaturated oils has been shown to contribute to a large number of disease conditions including increased cancer and heart disease; immune system dysfunction; damage to the liver, reproductive organs and lungs; digestive disorders; depressed learning ability; impaired growth; and weight gain.31”
Which is especially worrying as polyunsaturated fats are the ones we are told to consume more of…they are vegetable oils! Polyunsaturated fats are unstable and easily altered by environmental factors which leads to them being carcinogenic.
Not to mention that over half the fat found in clogged arteries is polyunsaturated not predominantly saturated as most mistakenly believe.
“Elevated triglycerides in the blood have been positively linked to proneness to heart disease, but these triglycerides do not come directly from dietary fats; they are made in the liver from any excess sugars that have not been used for energy. The source of these excess sugars is any food containing carbohydrates, particularly refined sugar and white flour”
I would like to point out here that, yes, these foods are crap but to blame sugar and carbohydrates alone is a little narrowed in focus – there is plenty of evidence to suggest that sugar alone is not the culprit and it is more the fact that an over eating of sugar (taking in more than you burn) causes these issues.
“Cholesterol is not the cause of heart disease but rather a potent antioxidant weapon against free radicals in the blood, and a repair substance that helps heal arterial damage”
“Blaming coronary heart disease on cholesterol is like blaming the police for murder and theft in a high crime area.”
That last quote is a lovely little analogy that that should make it clear that just because there is a presence of one thing does not make it the guilty party.
I strongly recommend reading the article in full to gain a more thorough understanding on fats. Educate yourself and stop reading health and beauty magazines…they will only make you feel ugly.
