Why I train…

As a Personal Trainer I should understand why people train, what their real drive is…. but that’s not as easy as it sounds. I can empathise, listen and try and pick up on the deeper meaning as to peoples goals. Getting people to really open up to themselves as to the deep seated reason why they want to train is personal, really personal.

Not many of you will open up to anyone outside of your family or close circle of friends, I mean really open up.

I hear lots of reasons; to lose fat, to look better, to feel healthier etc.

All of them are surface reasons and don’t really dig deep enough into your lizard brain to drive you into a burning desire to actually manifest that change.

For example,  I want to lose fat may actually mean;

“I hope my partner doesn’t look at me and find me less sexy because I want them to always want me”

“I tried running a flight of stairs at work and struggled more than I expected and that scared me – my father had a coronary and I don’t want that to happen to me”

“If only I could fit into that outfit I really want to wear out this Christmas so my friends can see how I can lose weight if I put my mind to it, I am not a lazy slob”

I can’t force you to admit your deep seated reasons to me and frankly there is no need. You only need to admit them to yourself, write them down in a place for you to see. Writing things down gives them immense power, try it. Read them twice per day along with your plan you reach your goals.

Perhaps if I start with why I train it will help you with your awareness to your reasons;

I didn’t ever want to be helpless, I was helpless in childhood and never wanted to be in a position as an adult where I couldn’t help others or myself.

Never again would my physical weakness and lack of confidence cause suffering.

Now, years later and many workouts later I realise the bigger benefit of my training for strength.

When I look in the mirror I see my body that is sexy and gives me confidence, it shows other people that I have self control, power of myself and my actions. It tells me that I can overcome physical and psychological hurdles. My posture is strong and commanding, my gait is sure and movements are definite, purposeful.

By being consistent and resilient in my efforts under the iron weight my mentality in all endeavours I undertake outside of the gym are also positively effected by the same character traits.

I’ll leave you with this thought;

I am emotionally strong in equal proportion to my physical strength.
