Here We Go!

Thanks to all of you who have been in contact this last week getting signed up for Personal Training in Epsom this New Year.

Good Morning World,

My clients continue to progress and impress;

Well done Murray on hitting a 90kg only 2 weeks after starting to lift!

Claire is continuing to lose fat and shape up so well done with your diet - looking good.

Chris on getting much better at your inside work - your body shots are really hitting the mark more powerfully than ever - oh and don’t forget…eat more:)

Good luck to Malcolm who has a 5k run coming up this Sunday, I know you will do better than you think. Stretch!

Adam -nice snatch, you seem to have the hip snap now! I feel a personal record coming really soon. See you early tomorrow - warm up more and earlier.

Chris no.2 feeling sore today I am sure but well done for nailing the lifts last night. I look forward to seeing how things stand in a few weeks from now. Transformed, I think so. Push harder and aim for more (within reason)

If you want to continue to head in the right direction (which would be forward) then you have to work harder.

Regardless of your goals you have to strive to ask more of your body, this gets harder the greater the level of your fitness.

If a sprinter wants to run faster do you think he has to aim to run slower and produce less work in 10 seconds or produce more work in 10 seconds?More.

If you want stronger and thus more toned muscles, you have to work harder and lift heavier weights per repetition, not less.

All this has to be done within a sensible time frame. No one wants to be working out all day for hours on end (the volume of work would be too much and cause overuse problems). Set your self a period of time, you will train with 30 minute windows here at Epsom Personal Training; and then aim to work harder in that time frame, do more work within that window. You will be healthier, stronger, fitter and look better for it.

Doing the same thing over and over will not yield different results past a few weeks. Progress - ask more from your body.

Bear in mind that your body can only handle a consistant increase in work demands for a finite period of time before things go wrong and progress is reversed. Schedule your training into 4 week blocks of “hard and progressive” training, then back off for a week or two to allow your body time to recover, heal and manifest results.

Only have one or two days per week to train? No problem, just put your all into those sessions and you will see results so long as you demand more effort, more work within a sensible time frame.

If fat loss is your goal - eat less food than you do now and eat more healthy foods.

If strength is your goal - eat a lot

Chris Boardman forced to stop long distance exercise

The article describes how long distance endurance activity has destroyed Chris’s bone density and testosterone levels and thus - his career.

It seems that his revised exercise routine is sadly, only a little better. Later in the article Chris explains how he has come to work around the problem by long distance running, which is also known for causing the same problem and worse (ruined joints). I have attempted to let Chris know.

What is fitness? Epsom Personal Trainer explains

A question that should be on the lips of everyone interested in getting “fit”.

What does being fit mean to you?

To me it means being able to complete daily tasks with ease and still having a reserve that is capable of carrying out out the occasional extraordinary task - like pushing a broken down car, helping someone off the floor who has fallen, moving house for a friend, playing games and a variety of other tasks without waking the next day in pain and suffering.

For another person it may mean running a marathon, lifting 3 times their bodyweight or being able to touch their toes.

YOU ARE FIT FOR WHAT YOU DO.

Fitnes is not a sign of health, they can be related but rest assured they are not the same thing; a marathoner is fit for covering very long distances but they are not always healthy - too many die from exhaustion or heart failure, have wrecked joints etc - that is not health. Footballers are fit for running around, jumping and being agile - how many have knee replacements, torn ligaments etc - fit but not healthy.

If you want to be fit then great, I can help, if you want health, great I can help. Just don’t mistake fitness for health.

Just because you can’t run a 10k in under 30 minutes doesnt mean you’re not fit. It just means you’re not fit for that activity. In the same breath, just because you can run it in under 30 minutes does not mean you are fitter than those that can’t - afterall, can you lift double bodyweigth from the ground, ride a horse, walk on your hands?

Fat loss and toning

A few words on fat loss and toning with Epsom Personal Training;

Fat loss is very much a function of the number of calories you burn versus the number of calories your consume. You all know that if you eat too much you get fat, it’s just your bodies way of handling the excess calories that it can’t use in daily life of excrete.

What many don’t realise is just how many calories you take in during the day. Start to look at what you eat and add a running total in your head for a few days - it’s an interesting experiment. You will then have new found knowledge of your weight control, do what you will with the information.

Many people come to me wanting Personal Training to “tone up” expecting that alone will make them look better. Not without diet my friends. You can have the most amazingly toned muscles but they will not show through unless you strip away the blubber hiding them. Sumo wrestlers have awesome muscular development and tone but you just don’t see it because of all the fat.

Get your diet in check and your gym efforts will pay off. It requires a permanent change for the rest of your life - daunting indeed. Don’t be afraid of a permanent change though - you can do it and it’s not that big of a deal, small steps will lead to leaps and bounds.
