His forte, for me, is building strength and technique - the CrossFit website is a fabulous resource, but take it from me there’s no substitute for professional coaching (“toes up”, “bum back”, “pinch your shoulders”, “elbows forward”, “hamstrings screaming”). Richard helps me set my goals and achieve them. It’s amazing what basic barbell Olympic and power lifts, in rapid succession for short bursts will do for your physique and how you feel about yourself. “I have been attending Ham’s Fitness “Mission Condition” Classes for around 8 months in Epsom, and always look forwards to each weeks work out, due to the variety of the class, and my intent to improve my own fitness through turning up each week.
The classes are not aimed at any particular fitness group, as all ages and fitness levels are welcome, and Ham helps you to work together to achieve the maximum you are capable of, whether that be the most reps of an exercise you can do, or working against the clock at your best pace.
My personal goal in joining Hams Fitness was too simply to “GET FIT”. Like many people I have tried to keep fit and do some sort of general exercise myself. I got bored and gave up trying alone, and cancelled a gym subscription, as I could not justify the monthly cost, and didn’t feel comfortable in a gym environment. Ham has a different approach, without huge machines, and his professional yet relaxed attitude makes you want to do well, and listen to his sound advice.
Through attending the classes my general fitness and stamina has improved by leaps and bounds, as I have beaten old routine session times, and increased my capability to do longer and more controlled reps of certain exercises, for example Squats and Pull Ups, and as a bonus I have gone down 2 trouser sizes, not that I ever felt I was over weight, but I have toned up, and now feel more confident.
From joining Hams Fitness, my drive to keep fit has extended, to playing squash once a week, and have also begun to try Yoga to become a little suppler, as I’m not getting any younger…!
Ham is an excellent coach and mentor during your class, and he offers you a great yet simple work out, but in his own words, “You have to push your self to achieve results, because the harder you work the fitter you get!”

“I decided at the age of 44 that I would like to actually do something to gain some weight and strength rather than just putting it off. I was introduced to Richard or ‘Ham’ who immediately put me at ease, listening to my ambitions and concerns. Gyms are daunting at first to a newcomer. “I had been interested in having some personal training sessions concentrating on cardio and core strength as those had been missing from my workout routines recently.
I arranged some sessions with Ham, initially 6, and told him what I was looking for and what my weaknesses were.
Ham put together a programme and what started out as 6 sessions has become on going.
The sessions always leave me motivated and looking forward to the next. He uses routines alternating between large muscle groups and intensive cardio work.
What I most enjoy is that no 2 sessions are the same.
Ham constantly mixes up and varies the workouts whilst always keeping up the intensity and his motivation. I particularly enjoy the boxing routines paired with floor strength exercises. My legs, back and midsection are now much stronger and my overall fitness is greatly improved.

‘I booked up 6 x 30 minute sessions with Ham as I wanted to put some motivation and intensity back into my workouts and it was a ‘treat’ to myself to get me focused again. I started training for Triathlons in May 2005 and regularly enter various distances of running races. The training that Ham gave me over the 6 week period was mainly to help with core stability and help to push me to work harder and to my limits. I had not realised I could push myself to quite those levels and Ham’s relaxed manner combined with a clear and direct way of leading the sessions helped me to bin any possible excuses I may have had for short-changing myself in terms of intensity!
So all that is left for me to say is a huge thank you to Ham for some great personal training and positive motivation. I will definitely be coming back to you for more training this year and possibly some advice of Nutrition too’!
