Should you be worried about getting bulky from lifting weights if you are a woman?
An often asked question and understandably so. When we think of training with weights our minds are drawn to images on magazine covers and bodybuilding websites of extremely lean and heavily muscled people.
What the magazines fail to show is the 99% of other trainees that never get “bulky” or super lean.
They fail to show the people that are stronger, healthier, tighter and happier without the show stopping muscle; the women that have become more confident, happier, more functional, sexier with faster metabolisms, that look and feel athletic from becoming stronger and more toned through weight training!
The two images of the above women (Personal Training clients of mine) show what real weight training does to real life women. It transforms their bodies in an inspiring way, in a way that makes them feel empowered and in control. It does not leave them bulky.
“Bulk” as it gets called is a function of diet for normal drug free trainees (I’ll expand on the drug comment below), only the most extreme cases build “bulky” amounts of muscle and if you’re wondering whether or not that’s you, you’d know already as you’d be naturally very muscular and strong without formal training.
Some people have a genetic predisposition to gaining muscle, they have an abundance of muscle fibres and fast twitch (the big fibres) fibres; they are very rare and I’ve only trained maybe two females like this in over a decade. The extreme end of a bell curve.
Don’t worry, unless you have natural muscular bulk and strength you won’t get massive bulky muscles from weight training, you will however, become stronger, tighter and more confident.
Back to the Elephant in the room
I mentioned above that if you were drug free then you’d not end up looking like the media portrayed weight trainers. You won’t.
When you see veins, rippling muscles and muscles on a woman that wouldn’t look out of place on a full grown man then you can be assured they are using steroids.
Most people will vehemently deny that they are on them or have ever been (even going through one cycle of these drugs will permanently alter your muscle building potential) because their careers may well depend on them and in many cases, are illegal in their country.
Make no mistake, steroids are everywhere in the fitness industry.
Yes, may people get amazing physiques that are athletic and lean without using them but getting huge AND lean is not possible for women, without drugs.
Bottom Line
If you choose to change your mind and body for the better through weight training then go forward knowing that you won’t get big and bulky from doing so…you’ll get stronger, more toned and more confident in your daily life!
Excess body fat will give a person the bulky appearance but building a little extra muscle will not. If you start lifting to change your body, then your diet must also change to reveal the tight and toned you!
Now go forth and get stronger you gorgeous creature. And remember….
A strong woman is a sexy woman
